Beyond the Cross of Calvary

CrossofCalvarynew

Every Good Friday we are contemplating the sorrowful death of our Lord, Jesus on the cross. By his agape love, He gave His own life for the salvation our souls. He knew well what is like to carry the burden of our sins on the cross of Calvary but he humbled himself for the salvation of humanity.  “Going a little further, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” (Matthew 26:39). Let us not refuse our crosses in life because this is the only way of following Jesus. Let us not ask God to take away our trials, but tell Him to grant us sufficient grace to surpass the rough and hampered roads into our own Calvary in life.

Various circumstances in life may weaken our faith and even trample our dreams. Life seems so unfair and then hopelessness will conquer us. When we lost everything in this world, let us look upon the cross of Jesus. His obedience to Our Heavenly Father must be our guide for living. “Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John15:13).  He truly manifests a kind of love which is beyond sacrifices and pain. Jesus generously demonstrates His unconditional love to the human race even it means to suffer an awful death on the cross.

Look upon the repentant thief who was hanged beside Jesus. “Then he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy Kingdom” (Luke 23:42). How inspiring! How grateful this man, though a criminal, he accepted his fate and lay down his future to Jesus. The unfathomable faith of this thief is worth emulating for when faced with unfavorable situations.

The different trials in life will strengthen us and give us the courage to move whatever hindered our path. “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live” (John 11:25). Resurrection is not a reward for the good works we have done, but a privilege given to all His beloved children. This repentant thief believed in his heart that Jesus is a King who will reign on His Kingdom of love, someday. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise. (Luke 23:43). Giving hope to others in times of difficulties will shed a light on their gloomy days. It is enough to uplift their drained and ailing souls.

How wonderful are the promises of Jesus that someday we would be on His paradise!  What a promising gift to His faithful and obedient servants. God’s heavenly dwelling is beyond we could ever think of. It is a place of highest honor, glory and praise. “Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever” (Daniel 12:3). The radiance of God will serve us the light that glisten the entire vicinity. This is the fullness of life beyond the cross of Calvary. It is indeed, a crown of glory beyond pain and shameful death.

In God’s dwelling place everybody lives in perfect harmony. It is where peace and boundless love reigns. It is a place wherein no more sorrow and pain – the perfect abode for all His beloved and faithful children. “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the older of things has passed away” (Revelation 21:4). How I wish I would be with Him in the paradise someday. How about you? Surely, there would be a grand reunion in heaven – the wonderful place we all yearn to dwell in.

The Open Line to Heaven

Openline

Prayer is one the most powerful form of communication between God and man. It is free of access and the only password we need is our strong and unbearable faith to Him. Prayer is an expression of our connection to God. A man who losses hope and can’t find a solution to his problem, should ask God’s guidance without a single doubt in his heart and it will be given to him. Our Lord is a generous God, if only we trust on Him completely our requests would be granted on His own perfect timing.

Prayer however is not a monologue.  When we pray we must also listen because God wishes to communicate His people through prayer. The secret of prayer is being hungry and thirst for the Living Water – God. The Psalmist says; “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God” (Psalm 42:1). Prayer signifies our closeness and personal relationship to God. How to pray? When to pray? What to pray?

How to pray?

We can pray silently. In every instant, Jesus wanted to listen to our hearts. He wanted us to inform Him of our personal affairs although nothing is hidden from His watchful eyes. All Jesus wanted is that we should be honest and offer to Him every little concern that we have. This is a simple prayer focused on God. And most of all we can pray in words. God knows our every thought, desire and action, but let us also tell Him our needs using our vocal prayers.  We can pray joyfully and expressing our closeness and gratitude to God. This is through singing hymns of praise to the King.

Let us not just pray because we wanted something from God however, we can always tell anything we wanted to.Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6). He is our ultimate friend who is ready to listen to us.

When to Pray?

We should not only pray when we are sad or happy. In prayer, we must be humble and helpless because the Holy Spirit will descend a humble soul.  In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans” (Roman 8:26).

We can pray to Him during our emptiness and allowing the spirit of God to pray within us. We can always pray even if we are infuriated, let us ask His guidance to make the situation favorable. Remember, God is our loving and merciful Father. He will listen to every word coming from our lips, but God listen more than words He will also examines our hearts.

What to Pray?

Let us earnestly pray for the marginalized, the sick, the migrant workers, and those who are afflicted and in prison cells. We must also to pray for the heads of the state and church leaders and ministers. Let us deeply pray for peace in our family, community and to our beloved country. And let us pray for grace and holiness in everything that we do, say and think.

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

He said to them, “When you pray, say:

“‘Father,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
Forgive us our sin for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.
And lead us not into temptation” (Luke 11:1-4).

Therefore, during our prayer time, we shouldn’t always do the talking remember prayer is a loving conversation between God and man. In prayer we must be like a little child telling Him all our needs.  Then, thanking and praising God for all the great things He has done to us.  And solemnly listen to the Holy Spirit whispering some words of wisdom deep within us. In this way, the real joy and inner peace will be instilled to every heart that seeks comfort, love and forgiveness through our intimate conversation with our Creator.  And definitely, God answers every petition in His own way and perfect timing and even doubly grants our requests.

Fruit of the Spirit

LOVE

Love is one of God’s indescribable gifts. It is His passion for human beings. The love of God is a commitment, but it is not dependent on feelings. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only begotten Son that whoever believes on him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16). This is the greatest love of God bestowed to all humankind. However, because of its greatness it is very hard for us humans to understand why God send forth His only Son to suffer and die in our place. Jesus offers His life on the cross for the salvation of our souls. May the love of God can be seen in us, through our Godly deeds and tender compassion to our less fortunate brothers and sisters.

JOY

The Holy Spirit creates and fills our hearts with much joy, which is the result of trusting God. Knowing that He will be our confidence whatever life may bring. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20). Real joy can only be attained by making God the center of our lives. The joy deep within us will also reflect unto our countenance. If God is with us no one can steal that joy which is a result of forgiveness and inner cleansing. He will make all things beautiful in His own way and time despite of the troubles in this life. Let us rejoice and lift our burdens to God through prayers.

PEACE

It has been said that “a world of prayer is a world at peace.” However, in this chaotic society where crimes, brutality and misunderstanding among us are very much rampant, it is impossible to attain real peace. Nevertheless, with God everything would be possible. In John 14:27 Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you, what the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Each one of us craves for global, social and personal peace, but the most essential of which is a peace from God – A Blessed Peace.

PATIENCE

“Patience is the key for everything.” It is essential in order to surpass every test that we will meet as we journey in this life.” Be patient, then brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near” (James 5:7-8). Forbearance brings peace, unity and harmony to all God’s children.

KINDNESS

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people holy and dearly loved clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (Colossians 3:12-13). Because of His love and compassion, God has given us many blessings to enjoy and share them to those in dire need. May the kindness that we offer will be done out of love and generosity.

GOODNESS

The virtue that we show to others reflects our personal relationship with God. The true followers of Christ are those who are able to live life with generosity and tender compassion to others. “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven “(Matthew 5:16).The truly godly among us are those who are able to love his brother and sister in Christ Jesus by sharing whatever resources he has in this world. The root of our goodness is no other than God.

FAITHFULNESS

A man of faith is never alone, because God will be his confidence in whatever circumstances that he will meet in this life. In Matthew 25:23 His master replied, “Well done good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge with many things. Come and share your masters’ happiness!” God has entrusted us with talents and abilities for a special purpose.  Let us invest our God-given talents for His glory by sharing it to the needy, so that when Christ will come, He will be glad that we are faithful with the gifts He bestowed unto us and like the faithful servant, we will also rejoice with Him on His dwelling place in heaven.

GENTLENESS

Gentleness is a product of self-control for a man who can control his emotions has true humility. As Christians, let us utter words that bring healing, rather than those that will defile others. Our deeds and actions might, lead our fellowmen to destruction. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control”( Galatians 5:22-23).Our brain should not harbor evil thoughts and desires rather of a pure and stimulating ideas. May God’s word will be our standard in life.

SELF-CONTROL

A man who is filled with God’s wisdom has self-control.” Different feelings, emotions and desires might outburst due to lack of self-control. Proverbs 16:32, states that “Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his emotions than those who takes a city.” Self-control results to right thinking, the desire to do good things and trusting God in whatever circumstances that we encounter through life. Self-control is necessary in bringing out harmony in every situation.

How Do We Live?

livearticle

In the Bible it is stated that no one is righteous not even one, all have sinned since the beginning of time. “The Lord looks down from heaven on all mankind, to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one” (Psalms 14:2-3). We committed sins by what we think, say and do. Sin is usually the offshoots of our desires for worldly things. However, let us not take sins merely the reason for lurking our lives into various wicked thoughts and evil desires rather we must strive hard to live a Godly life.

In this world, we lived accordingly because we are given the freedom to do whatever pleases us. Unfortunately, behind every freedom that we have, a great responsibility goes with it. Mother Teresa once said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” As Christians, we ought to impart the different blessings that God has entrusted to us. This is made possible by sharing our resources to those in dire need.  And taking the lost to Jesus is the noblest thing we can do as children of God. Somehow, this will make them realize the goodness and love of God through us, His instruments. “Let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins” (James 5:20).

Nevertheless, are we doing this in reality? How do we live? “This is not a question of choice, but an inquiry of responsibility.”  Sometimes, we become selfish in using our talents and abilities. We even aspire the things that others possess, taking life as a competition in terms of wealth, power and fame. Unknowingly, in looking forward for the pleasures of this world, we lost the real source of joy: JESUS. Let us rather consider our capacity to help others through the knowledge and skills that God has given us. Living here on earth is just temporary, because we are not home yet. “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18).

In our journey with this life, we are all travelers, who pass different ways but having the same destination: DEATH. Stephen Grellet said it well: “I shall pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being let me do it now. Let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” We must therefore look forward for our heavenly dwelling and start investing it now, while there’s still time and whatever things we can offer to others in need, today is the right time tomorrow might be too late!
